iPowerboat Ltd is delighted to announce that the company has been approved as an SQA accredited centre to offer further marine training courses. As many of you may already know, there has been some significant changes in the commercial workboat world, and iPowerboat Ltd has been progressing to ensure we offer all the training courses required for commercial users under one roof.

iPowerboat are really proud to be bringing you this new training course, and we’ve invested in some of the best equipment and teaching aids available to ensure this course provides you with an unrivalled experience.

As a result, iPowerboat Ltd are now approved to offer “Use of Radar and Electronic Chart Systems in Code Vessels”. The Award has 2 modules; “Use of Radar for Safe Navigation and Collision Avoidance on Domestic and Code Vessels”, and “Operate Non-ECDIS Marine Electronic Chart Systems”. Both training courses need to be completed to gain the full award however the modules can be studied individually.

Originally this was aimed at meeting the training requirements of the 2014 Workboat code (brown code), however, these units will be of benefit to skippers of coded vessels and the content is similar to the MCA Small Ships Navigation and Radar Course.

The MCA have confirmed within MIN 522 the radar module can be used as a standalone course for the radar endorsement under the MCA Boatmaster scheme.

Operate Non-ECDIS Electronic Chart Systems. 

Price: £375 (£750 for both modules)
Assumed Knowledge: Previous navigational experience to RYA Day Skipper standard. Seagoing experience and sea time satisfying the MCA’s requirements for Small Commercial Vessels. 
Duration: 2.5 Days (5 Days for both modules)

Course Content 

  • Use of Electronic Chart Systems.

  • Interpreting the information presented.

  • Understanding the capability of Electronic Chart Systems.

  • Dangers of over reliance as well as the rules regarding the use.

Use of Radar for Safe Navigation and Collision Avoidance on Domestic and Code Vessels

Price: £375 (£750 for both modules)

Course Content 

  • Understanding the regulations & guidance on the use of radar found on domestic and code vessels

  • The principles of operation, including limitations, of radar found on domestic and code vessels

  • Be able to set up a radar system for operational

  • Operate radar for navigation, including collision avoidance

In addition to the above courses, we have now finished our MCA Stability Awareness training course, and are going to be seeking approval for this imminently.
