RYA Powerboat Level 2

The UK’s Boat Licence.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is essentially a practical based course, that provides you with the skills and knowledge to operate a RIB, or small powerboat within inshore areas. The Powerboat Level 2 can also be used to obtain a commercial endorsement on certain MCA codes of practice allowing the certificate holder to skipper a small commercial vessel.

You can attend this course at our Kinlochleven training centre in the Highlands, or at our Greenock venue near Glasgow. Own boat tuition is also a great option allowing the course to be completed in your very own boat.

You’ll spend 2 days an a fun, educational and engaging course that includes close quarter boat handling, planing speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery, IRPCS collision regulations, securing to a mooring buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside a pontoon to name a few. You’ll have many opportunities to practice these manoeuvres under the guidance and coaching of a qualified RYA instructor that has lots of experience and a good sense of humour.

Assumed knowledge: None. May be preceded by Level 1

Duration: 2 days.

Minimum Age: 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate.

Ability after the course: Self sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft. A commercial endorsement can be added to this certificate.

Suitable for: Adults and children who use/or wish to use boats. It will show you how to operate your boat efficiently and safely. Ideal gift for special occasions.

WHAT CAN I DRIVE?

 

What can I drive in the UK for leisure purposes?

Pretty much any description of a powerboat can be driven in the UK without any formal training or licence. However some insurance companies will request that RYA Powerboat Level 2 is held as a minimum.

Can I use my qualification in Europe?

Yes, but you’ll need to apply for an International Certificate of Competence for the RYA to issue you a “licence”. You’ll only be able to operate vessels up to 10m in length.

What previous experience do I need to complete my RYA Level 2 Powerboat course?

To keep it simple. None.

Can I use my qualification commercially?

Depending on what code of practice the commercial vessel is coded to, then yes you can once you have obtained a commercial endorsement. It will limit you to a Small Commercial Vessel, you must operate within 3 nautical miles of your departure point, and operate in favourable weather and daylight only.

Do you need a licence to drive a speedboat in the UK?

No, you currently don’t need a licence to drive a speed boat or powerboat in the UK. However you are legally required to comply with the laws such as the International Regulations of Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) and in some areas insurance is also required. If you wish to drive a powerboat in Europe you will need an International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
